Location and
Ceremony
Years ago most couples were married
in their home churches. In today's modern society however,
this is not always the case. You may prefer a wedding
chapel, city hall, reception facility, local park, or
even your own back yard! One of the first decisions you
have to make is where you want your wedding to take place.
The next involves the kind of ceremony you want to have.
In making your decision, here are some points to consider.
Can you get married in your local church? This is an important
question. Many churches will not perform ceremonies for
non-members or for second marriages. Another question
to ask is if you will need to take a pre-marriage course,
and if so, how long these last? Discuss these matters
with your minister. Is a wedding
chapel or city hall for you? Your local phone book will
have a listing of locations that host wedding ceremonies.
If you are considering this option, arrange an appointment
to discuss your wedding. Do they provide a clergy person?
What is their seating and parking capacity? What are their
regulations concerning photography, size of wedding party,
music, rehearsal arrangements, flowers, pew bows, candelabras,
and types of ceremonies they offer. Also get a clear listing
of their fees. And, keep in mind that most churches and
wedding chapels must be booked a year in advance.
Many reception facilities will
also host your wedding ceremony. Are these in a motel?
If so, many will also arrange to house your out-of-town
guests. Are there separate rooms for the ceremony and
reception? Can they provide a list of clergy who will
perform ceremonies there? What are your options for music
and decorations?
Your city's recreation department can also provide a list
of locations available in local parks and community centres.
Be sure to check out such matters as privacy, times allotted
for your use, and seating capacity.
Lastly, consider your own home as a possible location.
Many couples prefer the informality and intimacy of this
kind of wedding. The minister can come to your house to
perform the ceremony. Rental companies can provide tents,
chairs, candelabras, etc. Family members can be included
in a variety of ways. But remember, this option is a lot
of work and is not for everyone!
Regardless of where you have your ceremony, keep in mind
that it is YOUR special day! Paying attention to the wedding
ceremony will help keep it that way. |
